The Joliet Bolingbrook Special Recreation Association (JBSRA) Jaguars softball team are State Champions. They took first place in their division at the Special Olympics Area 7 District softball tournament on Sunday, August 20 in Joliet.
The Jaguars defeated Cornerstone 10-1 and the West Suburban Special Recreation Association Bobcats Gold team 9-6 to take first place and advance to the Special Olympics State softball tournament September 9 and 10 at the Special Olympics State Fall Games in Decatur. The Jaguars defeated Opportunity House 8-5 and SEASPAR Blue 16-1 in the Championship game.
The team began their season on April 11. After practicing for six weeks, the Jaguars played their first game in Joliet against Special Recreation Joliet Channahon (SRJC) and won 15-0. During the next two months, the Jaguars defeated four more teams to remain undefeated going into the Illinois Therapeutic Recreation Section (ITRS) tournament on July 9 in Frankfort.
In the first game of the ITRS tournament, the team defeated SEASPAR 8-0. During the second game, the Jaguars were up against Lincolnway. The team battled their way back after being down 0-3 to win the game 6-4. They took first place at the tournament and remained undefeated with a record of 7-0.
On July 19, the Jaguars competed against rival Tri-County. Jaguars were down 3-10 going into the last inning and worked hard to close in on Tri-County, but experienced the first loss of the season with a final score of 9-10.
Team members are Calvin Stumpe of Naperville; Samantha Dvorak and Rudy Diaz of Plainfield; Tim Adams of Downers Grove; and Andrew Brown, Tim Buttenhoff, Jeffrey Ciskowski, Michael Ciskowski, David Clemons, Tracy Escobedo, Vanessa Fiore, Tony Moran, Calvin Morgan, Mark Oftedahl and Robert Stanton of Bolingbrook. Coaches are Kari Miller, Sherrie Izban and Alan Schlenger.
JBSRA is a cooperative extension of the Bolingbrook Park District, Plainfield Park District and Joliet Park District that provides year-round recreation programs for individuals with disabilities.
