PROUD PAST...CHALLENGING THE FUTURE

1970 Park District created by successful referendum. First building was a white farmhouse.
1972 Passed $2.2 million referendum for land acquisition and development.
1974 Site for Deatherage/Drdak Center acquired. Facility constructed with volunteer labor
1975 20,300 square foot Community Center on Recreation Drive opens
1975 Acquired Winston Woods - a 42 acre Woodland ($315,000 Grant)
1976 Bolingbrook Athletic Council (BAC) formed to coordinate field use and recommend improvements
1978 Bolingbrook Health & Racquet Club opens
1979 Joliet-Bolingbrook Special Recreation Association formed
1980 Park District receives National Gold Medal Award as Best in Nation
1980 $3.4 million referendum for park improvements passes
1981 Boughton Ridge Golf Course opens
1982 Bolingbrook Aquatic Center opens first indoor Wave Pool in the United States
1986 Over 600 recreational, cultural and self improvement programs offered annually by the Park District
1988 Hidden Lakes acquired with aid of Corlands. Site was eventually purchased in 1990 ($299,500 Grants)
1990 Community wide survey: 84% believe Park District plays important role in community life
1990 Satisfaction Guarantee adopted for recreation programs
1991 Cherrywood Park rededicated as Lions Park
1991 Remington Lakes Park site donated to district by William Gahlberg Association ($198,700 grant)
1992 & 1994 Bolingbrook Trojan Football National Champions
1994 Earned Elite Bronze Award for Lifeguarding from Ellis and Associates
1994 Heritage Park opened
1994 Successful $13.5 million referendum for a Recreation Center/Aquatic Complex
1994 DuPage River Greenway opened ($149,100 grant)
1994 Indian Chase Meadows earns IL Department of Natural Resources first ever Outstanding Park Design Award
1996 Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex opened
1996 Pelican Harbor Outdoor Aquatic Park opened
1998 Pelican Harbor Indoor/Outdoor Aquatic Park earned Ellis and Associates Platinum National Aquatic Safety Award
1998 Pelican Harbor Indoor/Outdoor Aquatic Park earned National Recreation and Park
Association's National Excellence in Aquatics Award
1998 Park District awarded IPRA/IAPD Distinguished Agency Certification
1999 Grand opening of remodeled and expanded Annerino Community Center
1999 Park District earned 2nd National Gold Medal Award as Best in Nation
1999 Earned National Recreation and Park Association Great Lakes Region Best Benefits

2000 Little League International Best Safety Award presented to Bolingbrook Associated Little League
2000 Annerino Community Center earned Illinois Park and Recreation Association Outstanding Facility Renovation Award
2001 Pelican Harbor Indoor/Outdoor Aquatic Park expanded with 5 new attractions
2001 Earned National Recreation and Park Association KUDO's Award as Best Overall Communicator for third year in a row
2001 Earned National Recreation and Park Association's Best Benefits Award for the 2nd time
2001 Community-wide survey (administered by WIU): residents expressed overwhelming satisfaction with the Park District (85.8%)
2001 Pelican Harbor Outdoor Aquatic Park earns Illinois Park and Recreation Association's Outstanding Facility Award
2002 Lily Cache Sports Fields opened with 6 (4 lighted) soccer/football fields
2002 Bolingbrook Park District Board of Commissioners earns South Suburban Park and Recreation Professional Association's first ever Distinguished Park Board Award
2003   Completed new Buildings and Grounds Facility
2003   Earned National Recreation and Park Association KUDO's Award as Best Overall Communicator for fourth year in a row
2003   Earned American Park and Recreation Society's Healthy Community Award for the second year in a row
2003   Earned National Recreation and Park Association KUDO's Award for Best Web Site
2003   Completed construction of Bolingbrook's first skate park at Indian Boundary Park
2003   Took a leading role in initiating a Community Character Counts! Coalition
2003   Illinois Park and Recreation Association awarded Director of Parks and Recreation, Ray Ochromowicz its distinquished Fellow Award for excellence in promoting the parks and recreation movement on a statewide basis
2003   Earned the 2003 APEX Awrd for Publication Excellence in New Web & Intranet Sites
2003   Park District Dance Team - Danceforce - qualified for the National Urban Jamm Dance Competition is Hawaii where it earned 5 Gold Medals
2003   Earned the Government Finance Officer's Association Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting Award for the second consecutive year
2004   Rededicated Indian Boundary Park. The park's expansion included Bolingbrook's first Skate Park.
2004   Illinois Park and Recreation Association awarded Bolingbrook Park District Danceforce and Power Dance Project with its Outstanding Program Award.
March 2004   Successful $15 million referendum to fund land acquisition and park improvements throughout Bolingbrook.
April 2004   Pelican Harbor Indoor/Outdoor Aquatic Park named as "first of four that float to the top" by Chicago Magazine.
2004   Bolingbrook Park District re-certified as an Illinois Distringuished Agency by the Illinois Park and Recreation Association and the Illinois Association of Park Districts.
2004   Park District Director, Ray Ochromowicz, was inducted into the American Academy of Park and Recreation Administrators.
May 2005   Unveiled two 25-foot portable climbing walls to be added to the Block Party Package. The addition was made possible with the generous support of Vulcan Materials.
July 2005   Bolingbrook Park District unveils the innovative Bloomfield Oasis Playground complete with artificial palm trees, Adirondack chair, and a pelican statue.
September 2005   Pelican Harbor Indoor Aquatic Park was renovated with new attractions, a state-of-the-art Menerga HVAC system to improve air quality, and other upgrades.
October 2005   Completed construction of Bolingbrook's second skate park-Central Park Skate Plaza.
2005   Joliet-Bolingbrook Special Recreation Association entered an intergovernmental agreement with Plainfield Park District for programs to be held in both communities for individuals with special needs.
2005   Recognized as one of four finalists for the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park Management, Facilities, and Programs.
2005   Earned the National Park and Recreation Association's KUDOs Award as the National Best Overall Communicator for an unprecedented 7th year.
2005   Earned the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association for the fourth consecutive year.
2006   Recognized as one of four finalists for the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park Management, Facilities, and Programs.
