• Park District History
  • Proud Past...Promising Future

  • Established by its residents in 1970, the Bolingbrook Park District has a history of consistent growth, excellence in programs and services and both state and national acclaim. Each decade has brought exciting changes, expanded services and new opportunities for residents to enjoy their park district. The 1970s saw the construction of the Annerino Community Center on Recreation Drive.

Open land acquisition was also an early priority, as the BPD acquired Winston Woods, a 42-acre woodland through a $315,000 grant. Forward-thinking vision also led to the formation of the Joliet Bolingbrook Special Recreation Association (now Lily Cache Special Recreation Association) in an effort to serve residents with disabilities.

The 80s opened in fine fashion, as the park district captured the National Gold Medal Award as best in the nation. With the support of a public referendum the BPD opened Boughton Ridge Golf Course in 1981. Bolingbrook Park District also added another gem to its growing list of attractions, acquiring the Hidden Lakes site with the aid of Corlands.

The 90s saw explosive growth – as the park district grew in tandem with its rapidly growing residential base. Another successful referendum led to the construction of the Bolingbrook Recreation and Aquatic Complex and Pelican Harbor Indoor/Outdoor Aquatic Park. With 84 pct of residents responding that the park district plays an important role in community life, a distinguished agency accreditation award and another National Gold Medal, the Bolingbrook Park District moved into the millennium with momentum.

New facilities highlight the past decade, as both Hidden Oaks Nature Center and Ashbury’s at Boughton Ridge were added in 2008. Hidden Oaks serves as the hub for the Hidden Oaks Conservation Area – dedicated to educating and connecting people with their natural world. This LEED-platinum certified building features a nature-based preschool along with programs and events that advance environmentally-friendly practices.

Ashbury’s is a full-service restaurant, banquet facility and bar/grille that brings some local flavor to Bolingbrook. Great food, value and fun is the staple at Ashbury’s, along with truly unique events and entertainment.

Two new skate parks rounded out an already robust list of parks, playgrounds and ballfields, while the construction of Bloomfield Oasis showed that you can add a little tropical flair to the Midwest.

A proud history is a part of where we’ve been – a bright future is what’s ahead. Working with you and the residents of Bolingbrook, we’ll continue to respond to the needs of the community.
