Bolingbrook Park District Teams up with Kids Around the World

The Bolingbrook Park District has entered an agreement with the Illinois non-profit Kid’s Around the World (KATW), an organization that removes existing playgrounds, refurbishes them and sends them to locations across the world for children in underprivileged areas to enjoy.  KATW will remove equipment from four park district playgrounds this year.

This spring, Kids Around the World will remove the existing playground equipment from Heritage, Jaycee, Poplar and Remington Lakes parks.  After the playgrounds are removed, they are shipped to the Kid’s Around the World International Headquarters in Rockford. Once there, they provide an opportunity for people to get hands-on job training like welding and machine work as they refurbish the playground equipment.

The finished product is then sent to third world countries and installed for kids to continue to enjoy. All of this is done at no cost to the Bolingbrook Park District.

“We are very happy that the playgrounds our community has loved for 20+ years will have the opportunity to make kids smile in places that may not have the everyday opportunities that we enjoy,” said executive director, Ron Oestreich. “Kids Around the World has been fantastic to work with and we look forward to seeing our playgrounds bring joy to as many kids in a new country as it has here.”

As part of a successful referendum in 2018, Bolingbrook Park District is scheduled to build 21 new playgrounds over the next five years.  All five of the new playgrounds that are to be built this year are scheduled to be completed in late July.  For more information on the referendum projects, please visit www.bolingbrookparks.org/referendum.  To learn more about Kids Around the World and the work they do, visit their website at www.kidsaroundtheworld.com
