Summer’s Last Blast Replaced with New & Improved Events

To meet the needs of the community, Bolingbrook Park District has made some changes to their summer event line-up.  Summer’s Last Blast first started back in 1996 to celebrate Parkie’s birthday and the anniversary of the opening of the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex.  It then transitioned to what has been known as Summer’s Last Blast.  After 20 years of the free family event, Summer’s Last Blast concluded last year with the celebration of Parkie the Pelican’s 20th birthday, just as it originally started as.

New this year, Bolingbrook Park District is excited to announce the enhancement of two existing events, along with the introduction of a new one.

On Saturday, July 15 from Noon-6:00 pm, Parkie’s Pool Party will be held at Pelican Harbor Indoor/Outdoor Aquatic Park.  The aquatic park is located at 200 S. Lindsey Ln. in Bolingbrook.  There will be a DJ, tailgate games, a mechanical surfboard and a Wibit inflatable AquaTrack.  The Foundation for Bolingbrook Parks will host the first annual Duck Dash, where participants can purchase a duck and they’ll be released down the lazy river.  The owner of the winning duck will receive $500.

Admission the Pelican Harbor is only $4 for residents with a Bolingbrook Park District resident ID card and $8 for non-residents.  An additional feature of the event is a Chicago Cubs ticket raffle.  Tickets can be purchased starting May 1 for $10. With your ticket, you will be entered to win four (4) Chicago Cubs vs. St. Louis Cardinals tickets for July 22.  A 3:05 pm start at Wrigley Field tickets are located section 104, row 10, seats 3-6.  Raffle tickets can be purchased at the Annerino Community Center, Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex, or on the day of the event until 5:30 pm.

Proceeds from admissions and the raffle, will be donated to the Lily Cache Special Recreation Association (LCSRA) scholarship fund.  LCSRA represents the partnership between Bolingbrook and Plainfield Park Districts in their mission to serve the special needs population.  Plainfield residents with valid ID will enjoy the resident discounted rate of $4 during the event.

Parkie’s 5K is upgrading this year with the addition of a 10K course.  If you’ve conquered the 5K (3.1 miles), you can make the step up to the 10K (6.2 miles).  The race will be held at the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex starting at 8:00 am on Saturday, August 26. It’s just $23 to participate in the 5K and $33 for the 10K.  Registration is now open at www.bolingbrookparks.org/parkies5k.

Finally, BPD is proud to announce its all-new free family event.  It’ll have your favorite elements of Summer’s Last Blast with live music and fireworks, but with some added twists and turns.  Fall Fest: An Explosion of Color will take place Saturday, September 23 at the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex and will be free to everyone.  By having an event later in the year, the idea is to avoid the hectic schedules families have at the end of summer and the beginning of the school year, therefore giving more families an opportunity to attend.

In addition to the live music and fireworks, the event will feature fall-themed family activities and food.

Full details will be released with the distribution of the fall seasonal guide that comes out the first week of August.
